July 2007– Finecal Labels extend Girus system to monitor efficiency of rewinding machines.

Finecal Labels, member of the Finecal Group and manufacturer of self adhesive labels has recently added additional Girus Productivity Management equipment to an existing installation at its manufacturing plant in Bristol. The second generation family owned company, was founded in Bristol in 1967. Since those early days solid success has followed diligent management and controlled expansion, and today 40 years later Finecal Labels still have their finger on the pulse.

Last year as part of Finecal's strategy to reduce waste and improve productivity they installed the Girus Productivity Toolkit in their factory. Girus Productivity Toolkit consists of a number of machine data collection terminals that are retrofit to existing printing equipment and connected up to the company's computer network.

Machine activity is continuously monitored and all material and activity automatically logged. As a result the system is able to produce a host of valuable productivity reports, key performance indicators and statistical data.

Mr Norman Gough, Chairman of Finecal headed up the project and told us, "The market for self adhesive labels has become very competitive and margins have gradually been eroded to the point where no company can afford to be complacent. I know that to stay competitive in this market we have to be as efficient as we possibly can. We have been using the Girus Productivity Toolkit for the past twelve months to help us to identify weaknesses in our operation, although we initially selected a few specific machines to monitor when we introduced the system. Now that we have proven results from those machines and have seen the benefits to our company we are extending the project to also analyse our rewinding operation."

Rachel Walch, Production Manager at the Bristol plant had an additional requirement for the Girus system. She wanted to improve her post production cost analysis and reduce the considerable time and effort spent on a daily basis working out costs and profit margins for individual jobs. In response Girus created a custom software module that integrated with the existing system. The custom module reads financial information such as material costs and the product selling price from Rachel's order processing system, and as a result the Girus Productivity Toolkit is now able to calculate the machine, labour and material costs associated with a job. A few click of a mouse and the system produces a customised report indicating the costs and gross profit margins for every job processed, leaving Rachel free to spend more time working on operational improvements.
